Success Or

Senator Robert Byrd is getting along in years. He’s also in line to become president if something were to happen to the President, Vice President and Speaker of the House. Which would be a scary thing.

United States Senator Robert Byrd, (D-WV), will remain the President Pro Tempore in the next Congress.

Byrd recently announced he will step aside as chairman of the Senate Appropriations committee in January.

As President Pro Tempore, Byrd will be third in line of succession to the presidency.

Tuesday, President-elect Barack Obama called Senator Byrd “one of the greatest Senators of all time” in a phone conversation.

Byrd told Obama that he should call on him anytime he needs any help.

On July 18, 1947, President Harry Truman signed the Presidential Succession Act.  The original act of 1792 had placed the Senate president pro tempore and Speaker of the House in the line of succession, but in 1886 Congress had removed them.  The 1947 law reinserted those officials, but placed the Speaker ahead of the president pro tempore.
