Weight of Words

Was it America’s chickens coming home to roost, as Obama preacher Jeremiah Wright said, when al Qaeda attacked on September 11th? Did we “cause,” if not justify, those attacks by our “imperialist” actions?

That position is, not surprisingly, a stone-cold loser in a Republican primary anywhere in the country but particularly in a state as conservative-leaning as Kentucky.

That is the hot question in the race for U.S. Senate in Kentucky, where Ron Paul’s son Rand is seeking the GOP nomination to succeed Senator Jim Bunning. His opponent, Secretary of State Trey Grayson, has launched an attack ad linking Rand Paul’s beliefs with those of both his father and Reverend Wright.

You watch that ad and you figure that Rand Paul’s chances of winning the Republican nomination are shot, don’t you? Especially in Kentucky, six weeks before the election! Watch Paul’s response, and see if you think he manages to turn the attack back and make it a liability for Grayson.

It seems to me that Paul’s predictable outrage ad doesn’t get him out from under the weight of his own words. Riding an anti-incumbent wave, newcomer Paul had broken into a 12 point lead in a recent poll. Will that lead collapse?
